We think our neighbourhood is special – worth protecting, not just for the sake of our homes, but because of the sense of community and history it represents.
Who lives here?
Who doesn’t?
We’ve got musicians, international students, young families, refugees and urban tree changers. We’ve got pensioners and professionals, people born in Europe, Africa, Asia and all right here in Footscray.
Here's what some of them say about our neighbourhood:
"I have lived here all my life and the kids and grand kids grew up here."
"First place we bought when we moved from Vietnam."
"Like it because it’s close to everything"
"My house was built by William Angliss. I love the area - close to the city, lots of great restaurants, love being close to the wet lands, quiet street and I like the link with Footscray's history."
"I feel like we have added our own story to our house because we've been renovating for the past three years and it's been really hands on. When I first saw our house I was struck by the old world character of the street, the park opposite, the wetlands at the end of our street and the great restaurants and street life of Footscray and decided this was where I wanted to live."
"When I'm working outside people passing will stop and say hello. Of all the places I have lived in this one has a unique friendliness. I understand the lady who previously lived in this house still visits old neighbours and notes with interest developments to the house and garden."
"Safe parking, quiet area, fresh air. My home is special to me because it is my shelter. It is near the shops. I have lived here for a long time, a good neighbourhood. Therefore I want to join to protect this area. / I live near the shops, have no car so we walk and we are getting old, also we live here for a long period of time and we love this street as well as our house."
"It’s been a lifesaver being home alone with the baby, knowing there are other mums all up and down the street home too. Sometimes I just wander out and see who’s around to talk to, or go to the park and someone always comes by. I imagine our kids growing up together, walking to school together."
"I don't want to live anywhere else! My wonderful memories are here."
We love Footscray
